Run for Rotary in the Cardiff Half Marathon 2016Posted: February 8, 2016
To mark its centenary in 2017, the Rotary Club of Cardiff is undertaking a local community service project to raise £25,000 for the proposed new Maggie’s Centre planned for the Velindre cancer hospital in Cardiff.
Maggie’s centres provide much needed professional counselling, advice, help and support services for cancer patients and their immediate family members affected by the patient’s illness. They are being provided at many cancer hospitals throughout the country. There is already a very successful Maggie’s centre at Swansea and one is now planned for Velindre here in Cardiff.
The club sees a good opportunity to raise some funds for our project in the forthcoming 2016 IAAF Cardiff International Half Marathon, which will take place on Easter Saturday, 26th March. We are therefore forming a Rotary Club of Cardiff team of sponsored runners to run in the Half Marathon to raise funds for our Maggie’s project. At the moment we have over 90 runners and we would like it to make, or exceed, 100.
The Half Marathon is 13.1 miles long following a route through the suburbs of the city to the Cardiff Bay area in the south and north to the Roath area, returning to the Cathays Park. It is expected to attract international competitors, many running for their various charities and many for the sheer joy of running with like-minded men and women.
The Rotary club will register all members of our team to secure a place in the event and pay their registration fees. In return, we are asking all runners to aim to raise a minimum of £150 in sponsorships for our cause. Each will have a T shirt to run in supporting Maggie’s.
On completion, the organisers give all participants, who finish, a commemorative medal, a T shirt, and a goodie bag. We have hired a room in City Hall for all team members to meet together before the marathon and afterwards as they finish, to share a few moments together with Rotarians and others involved.
Anyone interested can contact me directly or, if a group were interested, through their leader. Registrations are on-going, so, we would be pleased to hear of those interested asap.
Please let me know if us want any further information at this time.
