99th President Installed!

Happy New Rotary Year! The Club had a successful, well attended and very enjoyable handover dinner / President’s Inaugural meeting on Thursday at our base at the Holiday Inn. It was time for President Gary to hand over the historic chain of 20160707_213352office to the 99th President of the Club, Keith Wilson. Keith was also our 67th President back in 1984 and this is a fitting way to celebrate Keith’s 40 years of Rotary Service by kicking off the 100th birthday of Rotary in Cardiff and in Wales later this Rotary Year. Gary was thanked for his year which has been very eventful. We have broken all our fund-raising records with over £25,000 raised. Our work will be making a tremendous difference to people’s lives. We have moved our day, time and venue of 20160707_215059meeting – after 98 years of being a lunch-20160707_213254time meeting Club we took the plunge into early evening meetings in January. A highlight of the evening was the presentation of a cheque for £11,000 to the cancer support charity Maggie’s, gratefully received by theirrepresentative Lora Wilson. Long standing member of the Club, past President and Paul Harris Fellow, Mick Mace was made an Honorary Member much to his and his family’s delight and surprise. The Rotarian of Year Award was awarded to someone who his not a Rotarian… Mrs Joan Mercer. Whilst husband George has been extremely successful this year leading the fund-raising, Joan has been there throughout supporting and, some might say, putting up with George deserves the trophy! President of the Inner Wheel Club of Cardiff, Mrs Viv Williams thanked the Rotary Club of Cardiff for all it has done and is doing and proposed the toast to the Club. Both Gary’s and Keith’s speeches were entertaining and perfect for the occasion. Gary’s humour coming to the fore and Keith’s knowledge and experience of Rotary inspiring and encouraging. Well done Gary for a great year – and good luck Keith!
